Song structures and what makes a good song different?

Most songs have different structures, which might include any or all of the following sections:

1. Introduction (intro)
This is a short section at the beginning that introduce the song to the listeners. Some songs start with drum beats, some with guitar plucking and some with keyboard. Try to experiment!

2. Verse
One of the main sections of the song. There will usually be several verses, each with different lyrics but all with the same music.

3. Chorus
Another main section of a song. This is where listeners usually sing along. There might be several choruses, but each chorus will usually have the same music, as well as the same lyrics (unlike the verse, in which the lyric typically change.)

4. Bridge
This section makes a transition from one part of a song to the next, or serves as a break between sections. For example, you may find a bridge between chorus and the next verse. You'll know the bridge when you hear it, because it feels like an entirely new section.

5. Solo (or Interlude)
Solos are often played over the verse or chorus structure, but in some songs the solo section has its own structure. Solo sections are usually given to the guitar or keyboard. There are some songs (example: Kurt Cobain), the solo melodies is the same melody with the vocals.

6. Outro
Similar to the 'intro', this section brings the song to an end. Without an 'outro', the song can end suddenly or fade out. Any ending is fine, as long as it's believable and played with conviction. Guitar player often do some feedback guitar noise at end of a song.

What makes a good song different?

  • First thing, the melodies must be strong. Usually people will sing the melodies of the song. Try to make an ear friendly melody that easy to remember & nice to sing along.
  • Experiment with few rhythms & beats to make the song outstanding.
  • Words. Spend time to write a meaningful & inspired lyrics. As Dave Mustaine, most of his fans admire every of his words.
  • Be creative and different. But be careful, it will outcome unique or else will sound weird to the listener.

Guitar: Positioning of the left-hand fingers

The string should be met by the tip of the finger in most cases, and the nails of the left hand MUST be cut short enough to allow the fingertips to be in a perpendicular position to the fingerboard when depressing the strings. The thumb applies counter-pressure from behind the neck.

When depressing the string, press it firmly, just behind the fret wire to produce a good, clear tone.

For economy movement and security, never lift a finger unnecessarily after it has played a note.

When the fingers are not depressing a string, keep them hovering comfortably close to the strings and ready to play.

Make sure the guitar is in the correct tuning

Wouldn't you believe, some of the rockstars that you seen on TV today don't know how to tune their guitar?

First ever thing before you play a guitar is make sure the guitar is in the correct tuning. You may tune the guitar by using a guitar tuner but you MUST also know other tuning method that are not using the guitar tuner. Don't depend yourself on a guitar tuner. Train your ears to listen the notes. Several methods of tuning such as relative tuning (correct relation to one another), tune using harmonics, tune using chords & tune to match the piano notes.

Then, when it comes to the band situation, make sure all the string instruments are in the same tuning. If your guitar tuned down half step, make sure the others tuned to the same tuning.

Standard tune: E A D G B e
Down half step: Eb Ab Db Gb Bb eb
Drop D: D A D G B e
Down whole step: D G C F A D
Drop C: C G C F A D

Feel like giving up?

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."
- Thomas Edison

Many musicians feel they never improve after practicing their instrument everyday. Some of them end up by giving up.

Believe me, some of the experienced musicians are telling you lies. Just listen to yourself & clear up your mind before you go to practice. Learning music is just like how you learn to write. Play it everyday & always feel good when practicing. You'll realize your practice today is better than yesterday just like how you learn to ride a bike. It's a learning process. And every time you fail is actually a lesson for you to not doing that thing again.

Listen to others is good sometimes but most of them are telling you to do what they love to do. A great musician is not about finding the style of playing, a great musician is creating the style of playing. Think of Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci & others. Just play whatever you enjoy to play. Every players got their own style of playing because your notes are sing by your understanding & emotions.

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work

Thomas A. Edison says...

"Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration."

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

"I never did a day's work in my life. It was all fun."

"I never did anything by accident, nor did any of my inventions come by accident; they came by work."

"Just because something doesn't do what you planned it to do doesn't mean it's useless."

"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up."

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."

"Results! Why, man, I have gotten a lot of results. I know several thousand things that won't work."

"There is far more opportunity than there is ability. "

"There is no substitute for hard work."

"There's a way to do it better - find it."

"To have a great idea, have a lot of them."

"What you are will show in what you do."

"Your worth consists in what you are and not in what you have."
